WAL Makes A Big Splash At WWAF!!
Congratulations to Vida Tuminas and Theresa Thornhill and all the hard-working WAL members who helped the Woodlands Waterway Art Festival effort a huge success! Among many firsts for our group, WAL took First Place in the Floating Art project!

Flora & Fauna Children's Project
Thanks to Elissa Fletcher and her fantastic team of volunteers, WAL and many budding young artists were able to complete all 16 squares of the Flora & Fauna Children's Project - And they look great !! The collective creativity of our Young Artists was wonderful to witness.
Here's more about them....
We had 197 artists "make their marks" over the two days. Ratio of boys to girls was 1 boy - 2 girls [ 1/3 boys - 2/3 girls] We had artists from 5 different states and from all over Texas. Age range was from 2 1/2 to 15 years old.

Flora & Fauna ~ A Child’s View
A WAL Children’s Project to Benefit a Worthy Cause
How exciting it is for us to be able to stretch and grow as Charity Partners with the 2008 Waterway Arts Festival! This is a wonderful opportunity to promote our League, ourselves as Artists, and our Purpose of advancing the Arts and Art appreciation in the Community.
Among the many opportunities for our involvement in the Festival, there is one project that I would like to highlight. We will be helping children attending the festival create rainbow scratchboard pictures of butterflies and nectar plants. These will then be assembled, framed, and donated to the Montgomery County Woman’s Center for use in their facility. This is a very worthy cause as it shelters and helps women and children remove themselves from BAD situations. It offers them safety, hope, and a chance at a new life – hence the choice of the metamorphic butterfly and their nurturing plants. The butterfly is accepted as the unofficial symbol of Woman’s Abuse issues. We have chosen scratchboard technique to echo this year’s featured artist, Sally Maxwell.
For more information on the Woman’s Center, check their website
I am also grateful to George Rodriguez, Store Manager of Jerry’s Artarama-Houston, for his generous donation of the materials for this project. If you are shopping there, please tell them you are from WAL and thank him for his support.
You can find more information about Jerry’s at www.jerrysartarama.com/houston
The essence of this project can be summed up by the following thought~
The Butterfly breaks from its dark cocoon
Into a new day sun,
And begins to ride the breeze of freedom
With hope on its wings. eakf ‘08
I am excited to head up this project and thankful for the volunteers who have signed up to help.
Respectfully submitted,
Elissa Fletcher
