    Class Description:

This class is great for beginner and intermediate level artists.

    Class runs 4:30pm - 6:30pm Monday evenings

    Monthly - (4) 2 hour classes (Members) $170.00

    Monthly - (4) 2 hour classes (Non-Members) $210.00

During the first session, Nassir will go over the material needed for this course. He will explain why the specific types of paper, paint, brushes, and other accessories are important for this medium.

    Class Overview:

During the first few classes, students will learn the fundamentals of watercolor as a medium. This is mainly because watercolor is not like other mediums. For example, it does not have white paint, which in most mediums is used to create lighter tones. Nassir will teach students about things like paint consistency and wetness of paper and how they can impact the quality of the artwork. Nassir’s goal is to simplify these concepts through well designed exercises so that students will be able to get plenty of practice and eventually be able to produce beautiful and expressive paintings in watercolor.

What you will gain from this course:

Students will learn the basics of painting and drawing for a variety of subjects that fall under the watercolor umbrella. Students will also be trained on how to think like an artist and will develop an eye for composition, color mixing, and judging value ranges. After establishing a sound understanding about the watercolor medium and art fundamentals, students will be able to paint any desired subject, including floral, still life, portraits, landscapes, and cityscapes in watercolor.

Necessary Supplies for the Course (not provided by instructor):

    ● Rough Professional Grade Cold Pressed Paper ○ 100% cotton

    ○ 140lb, 300gms

    ○ Block or pad size 9 x 12 (large sheets that can be cut down to desired size are also acceptable)

    ○ Good brands include Arches, Baohong, Saunders Waterford, etc.

    ● Professional Grade Paints ○ Yellow Ochre

    ○ Cadmium yellow

    ○ Alizarin Crimson

    ○ Ultramarine Blue

    ○ Burnt Sienna

    ○ Neutral Tint

    ○ White Gouache (Winsor & Newton)

    ○ Good brands include Daniel Smith, Windsor & Newton, Holbein, etc. ■ I tend to use Daniel Smith most of the time

    ● Brushes (Professional synthetics and hybrids) ○ No. 6, 8, and 12 Round watercolor brushes

    ○ No 3. Rigger Brush

    ○ 1 Inch Flat Brush

    ○ Good brands include Princeton and Winsor & Newton

    ● Palette ○ Watercolor palette of your choice

    ○ Both large flat mixing surfaces and separated wells recommended

    ● HB or 2B graphite pencil

    ● Eraser (kneaded recommended)

    ● Masking Fluid (Pebeo Drawing Gum)

    ● Tracing paper

    ● Carbon Transfer Paper

    ● Painters tape

    ● Board (to stretch if not working from a block)

    ● Plenty of paper towels

    ● Water bowl

    ● Kitchen Foam

    Important:

If you ask me what the most important item from the material list is, my answer will always be 100% cotton at least 140 lb, 300 gms professional grade cold pressed paper made by a credible brand. Investing in quality paper will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Good quality paper is a must for the best experience above all else.

    11:00am to 12:30pm

Richie Vios, an award-winning Plein Air Watercolor artist, will present a watercolor demonstration showcasing how the four pillars of great painting—Shapes, Values, Edges, and Color—can be used to achieve dramatic and atmospheric watercolor paintings. The image above is the subject for his demonstration.

He will demonstrate how to simplify the watercolor process by emphasizing the importance of learning watercolor consistency and mastering ultimate timing to reach the desired level of watercolor painting you aspire to.

    Artist Statement

I believe that the mark of a good artist is to be able to capture the different facets of life in his painting, the mood, ambiance, etc. In a sense, not just illustrating or recording what he sees but expressing what he feels.

The subject in front of me is my inspiration, complemented with my imagination, charged with my passion, and a personal artistic impression embodied in my watercolor works.

    Biography

Richie N. Vios SLPAPA, AIS, SWS

Born and raised in Cebu City, Philippines, surrounded by the influence of an artistic family, Richie ventured into academia after earning a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1995, he became a university faculty member.

In 2005, Richie sought fresh prospects and moved to America, working as an architectural designer in Clearwater, Florida, for six years. Upon his return to the Philippines in 2010, he resumed his architectural practice with a vision to harmonize Western architectural principles with Southeast Asian aesthetics. During his architectural practice in the Philippines, Richie dedicated his spare time over the next seven years to honing his watercolor painting skills, a passion that now defines his artistic identity.

Reuniting with his family in Victoria, Texas, in 2018, Richie embarked on a new chapter as a watercolor impressionist and Plein Air artist, reigniting his pursuit of the American dream. Presently residing in Austin, Texas, Richie participates in Plein Air events nationwide and leads watercolor workshops to share his expertise and inspire fellow artists.

Richie is a Signature Member of LPAPA-Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Member-SWS Southwest Watercolor Society, Member OPS-Outdoor Painters Society and Member AIS-American Impressionist Society.
